Sometimes life just doesn't go as planned. And therein lies the tragic beauty of it all
Back in 2018, I was rebuilding after a divorce and doing life as a single dad to two incredible daughters. As a Marine, I’d faced tough challenges, but nothing could prepare me for what it'd take to keep all the plates spinning to keep my family afloat. At the end there, we were just one or two missed mortgage payments away from losing our home—every day felt like a fight to survive and do so while insulating the little girls from the harsh reality that lurked, should I make a single financial misstep.
One night, after tucking the girls into bed and putting away the dishes, it hit me: this house, which was now too big and expensive for just the three of us, could be more than a burden—it could be a business. That’s when Altus Resorts was born. I wanted to turn our weakness into strength and teach my daughters about the power of resilience and entrepreneurship. Together, we transformed our cherished home—the one where they took their first steps, where we celebrated joys and mourned losses—into a welcoming retreat for families and groups.
That first rental became our lifeline. Each booking pulled us further away from the brink, brightening and further securing our family’s future. My girls leapt in with their creativity, adding playful decor, greetting our guests, and curating games and puzzles to delight kids and adults alike. Their spirit turned a Hail Mary idea into something extraordinary—a place where families reconnected and groups celebrated, just like our famil had done over the years. I’ve never been prouder of the remarkable blessings they became throughout this effort.
Seven years later, we’ve grown from that first home to three spacious properties, each designed to bring people together. Yet our core remains unchanged: the personal care we weave into every detail and the promise to treat every guest like family. Whether it’s a multigenerational reunion or a weekend getaway with friends, coworkers or teammates, we create experiences that feel warm, intentional, and unforgettable.
Today, our family—and our team—has expanded. New members share our passion, helping us preserve the same warmth and attention to detail that started it all. Reflecting on our journey, I’m filled with pride for how far we’ve come from those uncertain days. Our mission endures: to craft spaces where memories are born and to welcome every guest into our story. Thank you for being a vital part of it.
